Review | BirchBox

One of my absolute favourite things is trying out and finding new beauty faves, so when my friend gifted me a three month subscription to BirchBox for my birthday I was so excited. As I started to fall in love with the beautifully packaged goodies each month, I decided that I’d have to share with you my beauty subscription box experience.

birchbox box

As I got my subscription as a gift I received my first box for my birthday tailored to questions my friend had answered for me when she ordered it. I was then able to edit my account, tailoring my BirchBox to me by answering a series of questions covering everything from my complexion, if I had dyed hair to my personal style. I feel like there was just enough questions to build a detailed profile but also, it skipped the ‘what zodiac sign are you’ type questions that have no relevance, which made setting up my account quick and easy.

Once I’d answered the questions I was all set up, to await next month’s box. And something which made receiving my BirchBox more exciting and actually quite helpful was that they send you a little email when your box is out for delivery – giving you something to look forward to throughout the day. Is it just me or does anybody else think that there’s nothing quite like knowing you have a nice little package of goodies waiting for you when you get home?

birchbox flatlay 1

The nice thing that I found about BirchBox, is that once your box arrives and you’ve had a little try of that month’s products you can rate each item in your ‘my boxes’ section on your profile and BirchBox will treat you to free delivery on your next box, plus a free mystery beauty product. Which is a win win really; you get to tell BirchBox exactly what you’ve been loving and you get another little treat out of it..bonus.

BirchBox is full of these sweet deals. If you fall in love with one of the products you’ve sampled in your box you can get 10% off the full size item at The BirchBox Shop. And once you order 6 boxes in a row you’ll become a ‘BirchBox VIP’ which entitles you to 15% off everything!

I couldn’t write a review of these little cuties without mentioning the adorable box designs that vary each month. The February box pictured here was 70s themed with purple and orange psychedelic flowers, as BirchBox celebrated beauty through the ages. Other box designs this month included a bold 80s pink and purple graphic and a fun 90s white and pink geometric print.

My favourite box that I’ve received so far, was definitely the collaboration with Ohh Deer in January which featured a pink flamingo and green leaf print, it was the true definition of the heart eyes emoji.

Any of the little boxes could be reused to store your new found beauty goodies or up-cycled into something else. If you’re the artsy kind, why not try gluing the boxes together to sit on top of one another, to create a quirky set of small desk drawers.

So what was in my February Box?

In my February box I received 5 new beauty products; Luseta coconut milk hair mask, Percy & Reed hair finishing polish, The Beauty Crop trio eye shadow palette, Model Co. conceal and correct pencil and Marcelle gentle make-up remover for sensitive eyes. I’ve been loving the coconut milk hair mask as I haven’t really dived into the world of hair care and hair masks before – something I probably should do with dyeing my hair every month, but I’ve really been loving how this product leaves my hair feeling so soft and smelling amazing.

I’m not going to go into a review of the products individually as I wanted to let you all know of the idea and process behind BirchBox but if you’d like to see a review of monthly products in the future drop me a comment down below.

The only major issue I had with BirchBox was that the eyeshadow palette I received (featured in these photos) arrived shattered. However, once I sent a quick email to them explaining what had happened, along with a photo of the product they were more than happy to send me out a new replacement palette, which arrived promptly, and in one piece.

I’m definitely looking into setting up my own subscription soon and would love to here of any beauty subscription boxes you guys have tried and loved.

How To Get That Natural Look

Now that party seasons over and the glittery statement eye shadows and red lipsticks are saved for the next festive season (although who truly just saves a red lip just for christmas?)- I’ve found that I’ve been loving a more natural makeup look.  In today’s post I’ve decided to share with you the products that I’ve been reaching for to create an everyday natural makeup look.

The Base

At Christmas I was kindly gifted a Tarte Maneater Makeup Set, you’ll see quite a few products are featured in this look as I’ve been loving experimenting with them in my everyday routine. One of the products that was in the set was the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Full Coverage Foundation in shade medium honey. This shade is a little darker than my usual, so I have been mixing it with my regular Revlon Colorstay Foundation in shade sand beige. The Tarte Foundation has a mousse-like consistency, seemingly a lot heavier than my usual foundation, however after application, I honestly feel like I don’t have any makeup on at all. And it provides great coverage – if you’re after a more full coverage high end foundation then definitely give this one a try. When applying this foundation I’ve firstly been using my egg sponge, mixing the two foundations together on the back of my hand, applying as usual but then blending with a Tarte foundation brush just to completely blend the foundation in. I’ve then been taking my Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in shade 1 fair and concealing any blemishes I may have and also using it to brighten underneath my eyes.

To contour I’ve been using my trusty Bareminerals Ready Color Boost, The Select Reserve and applying it to just below my cheekbones and fore head and blending. I’ve been loving the palest highlighter (it doesn’t have a name sorry) from the NYX Butt Naked Turn The Other Cheek Palette, it adds a little subtle glow which makes it perfect for everyday use. The pigmentation of NYX highlighters is gorgeous for a drugstore brand, so go light at first and then build up if you’re going for a bolder night time look. I’ve been applying this along my cheekbones and some to my forehead, to compliment the bareminerals contour.

The Eyes

edit 4 done

To keep this look as natural as possible I’ve been using minimal eye shadow and trying to keep the look all about the lashes. For eye shadow I used the shades passion and purr from the Tarte Maneater Palette– taking passion all over the lid, running purr just through the crease. I tight lined my upper lid with (you guessed it) Tarte Maneater Self Sharpening Eyeliner in shade black and then took the pencil along my lash line. This little bit of eyeliner helps to make lashes appear fuller and thicker.

Speaking of lashes the star of this show, really has to be this mascara. I have fallen in love with the Tarte Maneater Mascara. This is definitely my favourite product from the Maneater Collection I’ve tried so far. It beautifully lengthens and defines lashes, giving you that fluttery falsies look without the hassle of tweezers and glue. I’m surprised I haven’t heard more about this product before, it’s definitely going to be in my makeup bag for a while.

For brows I’ve been using the Mally Universal Brow Powder And Filler, a product that’s always a go to for me. It’s just a perfect shade, that’s easy to apply with the Mally brow brush that comes with it or any alternative brow brush.

The Lips

To complete this natural look, I’ve been using the Tanya Burr Cosmetics Lipstick in shade Bear Hug. Oh my god, I am in loveee with this lipstick. It is my perfect nude colour and really completes this look as it has some peach and brown tones. I really like the creaminess that this product has when applying it which settles to a semi-matte finish. It’s long wearing and yet still keeps your lips feeling as though you haven’t got anything on throughout the day- definitely a fave at the moment. Also can I just mention that I really like the new packaging for the Tanya Burr Cosmetics, I definitely need to try out some other products from the range.

Please let me know if you try any of these products out, I’d love to hear whether you’ve been loving the Tarte Maneater mascara as much as me or whether you’re also a fan of the Tanya Burr Bear Hug lipstick.

REVIEW: Max Factor Lipfinity

I was browsing my local Boots store at the weekend when I stumbled across these liquid lip colours at the Max Factor counter – a brand which I rarely buy from. I was drawn to them by their classy gold packaging and resemblance of the Kylie Jenner lip kits (really want to try them!!) There are a wide variety of shades but these two were the ones that managed to jump into my basket: 003 Mellow Rose and 160 Iced. Iced is a lovely brown, nude, nineties vibe shade whilst Mellow Rose is a blue toned pink.

BeFunky Collage.jpg

So that I could give you a full review of them I wore ‘Iced’ to college today. As these lip products come with two products the box describes how firstly you apply the lip colour and then when dry, you apply the clear balm.

On application of the product it goes on quite smoothly and the doe foot applicator makes it easy to put on. I did find that when applying shade ‘Mellow Rose’ it went on quite streaky and so I had to put two coats of the lip colour on in order to achieve the desired opaque effect, but one coat was fine for ‘Iced’. Next, you have to keep your lips apart whilst the liquid lip colour sets. This isn’t great if you’re in a hurry but is a vital step if you want your lip colour to look good – as I found this stage to feel sticky and in all honesty a bit gross. After the colour drys you then put on the much needed balm on top which helps to stop the feeling that your lips have been dried to an inch of their life. This balm can then be used to touch up throughout the day. I feel that this is definitely needed – especially if you don’t like the feeling of very matte, dry lips.

However, despite the not so great application process I do have to give it to Max Factor that this is definitely a product that lasts! It did not come off throughout the day, even after eating. I highly recommend this product, if you don’t mind spending a little bit more time on the application process, if you’ve been looking for a ‘stay-all-day’ lip colour. It definitely lasts 24 hours!

BUT, and it is a big but. Although these durable lip colours will stay throughout the day they just want to stay all night too. I have found that they are nearly impossible to get off. I have tried a combination of ‘Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water’ and ‘Lush’s lip scrub’ in an attempt to rid myself of the product. It does recommend on the back of the product to use an oil based remover which may be where I have gone wrong. Please listen to that advice if you are going to purchase these products as it feels as though your scraping paint off otherwise.

Lastly, I feel that  I would probably only recommend these products if someone was looking for a good drugstore liquid lipstick that has all day staying power as the hassle of trying to remove it pushes me to recommend more pricey products. Therefore, I am going to give this product 3 * / 5.

Beauty Haul

Recently I seemed to have gone on a huge beauty splurge- so that I am all prepared for the start of college next week..eeeek! Lets just say I’m very nervous but very excited about that.

So the first place I went to was Boots where I finally picked up a Boots Advantage card for myself and also went a little bit crazy. Is it just me or does Boots draw you in with the little ‘3 for 2’ or ‘Buy 2 get the cheapest free’ offers they seem to always have on?

I picked up a new mascara for myself – the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara. I’ve seen this used in lots of Gabby’s (VelvetGh0st) videos on Youtube and her lashes always look amazing so I thought I’d give it a try. Gabby also inspired my next purchase (another Maybelline product) a Color Drama intense Velvet lip Pencil in the shade 150 Fuchsia Desire. I wore this yesterday, and I have to say I’m loving the formulation of this product – it’s so creamy on the lips yet still has got this lovely matte finish that feels like you haven’t got anything on your lips at all. I think I should really look into purchasing some more of these. I also purchased some strawberry Carmex from Primark.

It’s reached that point in the year again when I run out of concealer and feel the need to try a different one. This time I decided to pick up Soap and Glory’s Kick Ass Concealer. It is slightly different to the concealers I’ve brought before in terms of application but it works like a dream and the packaging is super cute- as it always is from Soap and Glory. Due to them cheeky little Boots deals I picked up another S&G product: the Archery Brow filling pencil and brush in shade Hot Chocolate. This makes my brows look incredible – a much neater and natural finish than products I’ve used before. However I don’t really like how the pencil part is one of those ‘twistable’ things… you know them ‘twisty’ things that push the product up instead of you sharpening it? Yeah, I don’t like them, I feel like they work for a bit but then they always end up breaking on me- do any of you have this problem?

I purchased 2 Rimmel products: the Rimmel Wake Me Up anti-fatigue Foundation and the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder. Two basics really. I usually buy the Rimmel Match Perfection but the Wake Me Up was on offer so I decided to mix it up a bit and I thought the Stay Matte Powder will be great for those days in College when I need to touch up.

And Finally, from Boots I bought the Real Techniques Core Collection Brush Set. I have wanted these brushes for soooo long and when I saw that they were on offer (there’s £10 off them in Boots go grab them now!) I had to get them. I’ve been using them for the last couple of days and they are amazing- they have totally altered the way I put my makeup on and the finish on my makeup is so much better than it was before. I LOVE THESE BRUSHES! If you follow me on Instagram you will already know this.

Ok, Skincare. I went into Poundsaver recently and I know what your thinking Poundsaver and Skincare? but yes when I went to Boots I forgot to pick up my usual Tea Tree Moisturiser so instead of going back to Boots I picked up this Tea Tree daily use, cleansing facial scrub suitable for all skin types. It was only a pound so I wasn’t expecting miraculous results but so far I am loving it. I’ve used it twice already – last night and this morning and my skin feels really soft. I think I’m going to continue using it for a week and then do a review on it for you. When I was in Poundsaver I also picked up these Tea Tree deep cleansing nose pore strips. I have heard Louise (Sprinkle of Glitter) talk about something similair to these on her channel before and so because they were a £1 I decided to pick them up. I used one last night and they worked like a treat.

Finally, I picked up these Nspa Body Mists from Asda. They smell absolutely incredible. I’ve been seriously loving the smell of Passion Fruit recently so I picked up the ‘seriously intense passion fruit’ one along with the ‘fresh, sweet raspberry’ scented one. They are so strongly scented and smell really girly and pretty. (I’m not good at describing scents but hey ho).Next time your doing your shopping go give them a smell. They’re also on 2 for £4 so your saving a pound too.

I hope you enjoyed this post. What beauty products have you been loving lately? Please let me know down below.

Sunday Recipe | Banana Nut Bread.

Today I’m giving you a flawless recipe so that you can encompass your inner kitchen goddess and get baking. I recently made this cake for my Mum’s birthday a few weeks ago and I’ve been dying to make it again.

The following recipe does contain Walnuts so obviously don’t attempt this recipe if you are allergic to nuts.

225g Plain Flour                    Plus extra for dusting

1tsp Salt

1tsp Bicarbonate Of Soda

115g UnsaltedButter             Plus  extra for greasing

200g Caster Sugar

2 Eggs

3 Bananas                              Mashed

115g Walnuts                         Chopped

2 tbsp Milk

Preheat Your Oven to 160 degrees C/ 325 degrees F/ Gas Mark 3.

Lightly Grease and flour a 900-g/2-lb loaf tin.

Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda into  a bowl and set aside.

Cream together the butter and sugar in a seperate bowl until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, beating well after each addition. Stir in the bananas, walnuts and milk until thoroughly mixed. Then add the flour mixture and stir until everything is combined.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin.

Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour 10 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Leave to cool in the tin for 20 minutes before turning out.

And this is the final result. This delicious and easy to make desert has certainly become a family favourite and I dare say it’ll all be gone by the end of tonight,

Hope you have a fabulous weekend,

Leah xxx

Time to Travel

Seeing a lot of people going on Holiday and travelling to exotic places this Summer has got me thinking about where I want to travel in the future. So here are the places I would love to go and visit some day.

  • America – I want to travel all over America from Los Angeles, San Francisco,New York and Nashville. I just think it would be great to travel to big cities and spend the day getting lost amongst the bright lights and small ‘hipster’ coffee shops.
  • Italy – I would love to visit Pompeii, Mount Vesuvias and Venice: birthplace of the waltz. I think the devastation of Pompeii is both devastating and mesmerizing.
  • France (Paris) – I visited Paris with my family a while ago when I was about 8, but I can’t really remember it so I would really love to go back and explore it all over again.
  • Dubai – I think Dubai is so extraordinary – it looks like a city from the future with it’s contemporary skylines and luxury lifestyle. Visiting here would definitely be a once in a lifetime experience.
  • Australia – First off, who just read that in an Australian accent because I sure did type it in one. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is just one of the many reasons to visit this fascinating place. Plus, it has a wonderful history!
  • Egypt – And finally, Egypt. It is a place of mystery and magic. The Egyptians beliefs about afterlife are completely mind blowing and their pharaoh’s are something out of fantasy stories. This place is definitely home to some of the greatest human architecture that has ever existed.

Please let me know down below where you would like to travel or where you have visited this Summer. i would love to here about your adventures.
